With AT&T planning to purchase nearly $2 billion worth of wireless spectrum licenses from Qualcomm, the company hopes to rehabilitate the reputation of its wireless network. Current iPhone customers will still lose calls, however: the company, in announcing the deal, notes that it expects to deploy the spectrum “once compatible handsets and network equipment are developed.”
The availability of the nationwide spectrum follows Qualcomm’s decision to shut down its FLO TV business by March 2011.
